5 Tips for Buying a Wedding Dress in Singapore

02 APRIL 2016

We know brides-to-be in Singapore have a lot on their hands – from finalizing the venue to the wedding dress to everything in between that would make you look and feel like a million bucks on your most special day.

So while you get busy with the upcoming wedding, let us take some burden off your delicate shoulders by sharing some tips to find that perfect dress for your wedding.

#1 – The Budget

The budget is the first thing to consider before you set out shopping for a wedding dress. There are many expenses that need to be taken care of and it is a good idea to sit down with your ‘to be’ husband and decide on how much you’d like to spend.

Do you know what you are looking for - a bespoke piece or a design off the rack?

Narrow down your choice of boutiques accordingly so that you only need to choose in your budget and style.

#2 – The Style

We do recommend that you skim fashion magazines and websites for the silhouettes and styles you love – dreamy, romantic, minimalistic chic or a princess.

But, don’t fall in love with any single style. Go shopping with an open mind. Many brides are surprised to know that styles they never wear in everyday life are the ones that look the most flattering when trying on a wedding dress.

Let the stylist show you their best once you have shared your ideas – who knows what you’d find!

#3 – Don’t over do it

It can be quite frustrating as you try on wedding dresses with all eyes in the store upon you. Don’t let the fun go out of the experience and stick to only 2-3 boutique appointments a day.

It is best to go shopping with not more than 2 people, maybe your mother, sister or a best friend, so that you can have an honest opinion and not a shower of opinions to confuse you further.

#4 – The Discount Trap

Many brides are choosing the online route to shop for their perfect dress. Online stores do offer the advantage of endless variety and discounted prices, but there is no way you could try the dress and know if it would suit you.

A better idea may be to keep an eye out for store discounts and sample sales to find your favourite labels at discounted price.

However, remember that the pieces in a sample sale would have been tried on by many and may not be in perfect shape. Check thoroughly for defects to avoid spending hundreds of bucks in alterations.

#5 – Starting too early or too late

Most dresses take about 7-8 months to get ready. It is best to start the search with at least 10 months in hand to avoid the last minute rush. In case you are short on time, some designers may oblige you but less time would cost much more money.

Also, that doesn’t mean you buy your dress 2 years in advance, as no one wants to end up in a passé style on their wedding day.

At TheWeddingMart.sg, we aim to bridge the gap between the ‘soon-to-be-married’ and the service providers who could create a memorable wedding for you. Post your requirement online and save time and money by receiving the best quotes, quickly.
