Wedding Planning Basics: How To Get Started

30 MARCH 2016

So, you're just engaged? Congratulations! Before you walk down that aisle, however, there is the significant matter of planning everything that will make your big day truly special. However, there's no need to feel intimidated by the prospect of planning your wedding, especially if things are organized in a way that first takes care of the most pressing details and then comes down to the minor details as you inch closer to your wedding. The key to a successfully planned wedding lies in prioritizing every step, and seeing them through to the end.

1. Set a Date: Before you do anything else, set your wedding date. While it might be difficult to decide on an exact date right away, you can start off with a range of dates that might work for you. In order to finalize your date, however, you will need to factor in a number of conditions including the availability of the venue, the various vendors such as caterers, photographers, and  videographers, and if it is called for or needed by the families, traditional calculation of dates using a geomancer. Other factors that shouldn't be ignored include the weather and major holidays.

2. Make a Checklist: Once your date has been set, sit down with your fiancé and/or family and decide together on what needs to be done. Having a handy checklist that you can work down can keep you focused and minimizes distraction. In addition to creating your checklist, you can also create a folder or binder that will complement each item on your checklist – right from maintaining a catalog of wedding dresses, designs, prospective food menus and prospective vendors for catering, music, photography and wedding stylists.

3. Set your Budget: Armed with your checklist, the next logical step is setting upon a tentative budget for your wedding. The key factor to drawing your budget is deciding what elements are of the highest priority; these generally include your wedding gown/attire, catering, and the photographers. With that said, set realistic expectations by taking into consideration how much both parties are willing to foot, and who are willing to chip in.

4. The Guest List: One of the major decisions to take into consideration are your wedding guests. To invite or not to invite – especially when it concerns acquaintances and friends -is a question that involves  more than just the answer to the customary “Are they close to us?”. The preparation of one's guest list involves a mixture of both social and financial obligations. Socially, aside from family, you are obligated to invite your closest friends and acquaintances. But, at the same time, realistic limits need to be set, especially when you take your budget into consideration. A bigger guest party implies a larger budget. Once your guest list is finalized, it's time to start sending out RSVPs. Once your guests have confirmed availability, it'll be easier to get down to the next step of sending out your official invitations.

5. The Venue: Getting into the nitty-gritty here, it's now time to choose the setting for your big day. The venue is an integral aspect of wedding planning, since an unsuitable venue can make for a very forgettable wedding day. In choosing your venue, some major factors to pencil in are the seating capacity, the space available, and the amenities offered. Each of these play a contributing role in ensuring that your guests can come away from your wedding with pleasant memories, rather than dissatisfaction due to lack of consideration shown in the venue.

6. The Vendors: The vendors and service providers chosen for your wedding can make or break your big day. is the ideal place for couples to choose vendors that provide the services they need, be it bridal gowns/suits, stylists, photographers, bakers, caterers or florists. You can find the vendor that best suits your needs by posting a new project on the site, and listing out all your required services. After that it's a simple matter of choosing the best vendor among the bidding vendors. The Wedding Mart provides a comprehensive platform for couples to manage your contracts with the vendor right from hiring them to the final payments for their services. Alternatively, you can also browse the wide range of categorized vendors, sorted by their rankings, the services they offer and their rates!

7. The Smaller Details: With all the above the major concerns out of the way, you can slowly work your way down the smaller details such as the food menu, wedding favours, décor, and final schedules.

Planning a wedding need not be a stressful task, at all. If you find yourself overwhelmed, knowing that all of this is leading up to a day that you will cherish for the rest of your lives should make the planning worthwhile!
